Resourcing the Apocalypse: The Ghent Altarpiece, Balthasar, the Canonical John

Abstract

William M. Wright IV explores a contemporary Catholic resourcing of the Apocalypse through the lens of the Ghent Altarpiece and the canonical John. Drawing on Hans Urs von Balthasar and the Johannine corpus, Wright examines how Revelation, the Fourth Gospel, and the Johannine Epistles integrate Christ’s earthly passion, glorified existence, and ongoing intercession. The Mystic Lamb panel visually unites the Eucharist, baptism, and heavenly worship, offering a theological synthesis that reorients faith toward vertical eschatology and sacramental participation amid secular modernity.
